- Janet became a national
- hero. In 1989, she won the
- Sullivan Award as the nationΓÇÖs top amateur
- athlete. She attended Stanford University, in
- California, until she left to concentrate on
- training for the 1992 Olympics. She made the
- team and won a gold medal in the 800-meter
- freestyle and a silver in the 400.

- Following the 1992 Olympics, Janet stopped
- swimming briefly, but then decided to try to
- make the Olympic team for 1996. At the 1994
- national championships, she won all three
- distance events and raised her total of
- national titles to 42.
